He is born in Benevento (Naples) in 1856. He studies at the Academy of Fine Arts of Venice. In the 1884 he marries Fanny Carlini, her companion of Academy and daughter of the famous painter Giulio Carlini. They expose both successfully abroad. Raffeale illustrates some books of De Gheltof and is untiring and original organizer of wonderful festivities in the famous palaces of Venice and in the ville venete. In 1885 he exposes watercolors in Brussels, and he receives the title of member of honor of the real Belgian society. In 1887 he exposes at the Artistic National Exposition of Venice; its watercolor "the Fish market of Chioggia" is acquired from the Gallery of Modern Art of Rome. Later on, the painting " Noce of Benevento", comes acquired from the emperor of Germany. The famous Mr. Smith acquires all the first works of Raffaele, and brings them in America. In 1888 in Egypt he travels with the swiss baron Von Gonzembach and he illustrates the volume ' NILFAHRT', published in 1890. In a second travel with the baron Von Gonzembach, he travels in Palestine, Syria, Lebanon, and illustrates two volumes (' Pilgerrit - Bilder aus Palestine und Syrien'). Also he travels in Egypt , with Madame Stern, where he illustrates her book. In 1890 he exposes in Paris at the Gallery the Petit, where they expose also painter like Rodin, Monet, Pissarro, Signac. In 1890 - 1893 for madame Stern, he furnishes and plans in Fouburg Saint Honorč the most famous intellectual drawing-room of Paris. In 1897 he exposes 27 watercolors at the Berlin hall Schultz.. In 1898 - the 1890 mayor of Venice, conte Grimani, entrusts him the plan of bissone and the gondolas for the Real ones of Italy, in occasion of the inauguration of the Biennial one of Venice. In 1905 for Charles d' Orino, he illustrates a volume with title ' Nos Invisibles'. In 1909 for And Stern, he illustrates ' Legendes de Venise'. In 1909 - 1911 he plans and furnishes the villas in Cap.Martin in France for Eugenia Emperor for madame Stern and for madame Douine. In 1910 - 1930 he plans and furnishes the palace of madame E.Stern on the Canal Grande in Venice. In 1916 - 1920 he furnishes for madame Douine the Abbey of Saint Gregorio on the Canal Grande to Venice. For the Duchessa of Marquena and Basil Zacharof, he creates a great park and he furnishes the castle of Balincourt in the North of France (declared from the French government monument of national interest). In 1928 - 1933 last one its work of architecture and decoration are the villas of madame Douine-Heriot to the Giudecca on the lagoon of Venice. He lives in a palazzetto on the Canal Grande in Venice. He dies in Lido of Venice on the 27/04/1941. The market of the watercolors of Raffaele Mainella is in London (the most quoted ones are those representing orientals Egypt).
